Axle run-out. How much is too much?

In my continuing pursuit of making the kart handle well I'm looking at axle run-out (I think that's the correct term). Essentially, if I mount a dial gauge on a bracket fixed to the chassis and place the needle of it on the rear axle, just in from the outer edge, I record 20 thou difference (about 0.5mm) between the highest point & lowest. It's visible to the naked eye anyway, so I guess this is way too much, but how much is OK because i'm sure that even a brand new axle will show some degree of imperfection.
