on having read the recent links about cadet racing is that so many feel that there are so many cheats. kess99 probably recently found out that the right help/advice on set up makes an enormous difference to your performance. Racing karts is about commitment. Commitment to time in seat, to understanding where you are in relation to other competitors etc.

A good motor always will help, but without a good setup will not help in a (long) race. While racing with a 'team' has changed significantly from 2003 to 2013, it is the co-operation within the team that helps to get you on that good set-up. We used to enjoy (team) it for camaraderie, a good pit space and some-one to transport the chassis around!!

The real cost of engine preparation is not the bill from your re-builder but (in TKM at least) 4 to 5 hours you need to get the piston and bore into that 'good' spot. So for 3 motors that is significant COMMITMENT in time & expense. In ICA and 100 Nat. this was not a problem as the engines were only good for 60 minutes before the piston wore out!!! In 2013 substitute KF.In Rotax I understand it has much to do with the hone of the barrel. Every class has its' quirks. Once a class becomes mature problems set in. First with Comer cadet, now with Honda cadet and possibly Rotax. Fortunately much less so with TKM.

I will always want a better engine than the competition. Who would not. But after many hours of COMMITMENT to get a better engine I would not want to sell it. And if anyone has done Club 100 the pooled kart & engine are NOT equal. People will leave karting by the droves if this is introduced.

Thus cost rears it's ugly head. Karting is not cheap. Motor sport is not cheap. Karting is probably the least expensive of racing motorsports after autograss racing. Karting is for fun. Those that wish to go on to cars, fame and bankruptcy usually do it after a short period in karts with indifferent results with few a exceptions. But above all these people do it with 100% COMMITMENT.

I have never bought a mega engine. When I have hired an engine they were no better than my own.

One last word on cheats. There are some, usually mid field. However in 1996ish while testing at Clay we thought we were going well (1 years racing) when this kid in a beat up kart came p1$$ing past so much quicker. It turned out to be Gary Paffit, that years' Junior TKM S1 champion. From that time on I thought if he can go that fast, so can we. Took 6 years. Still doing it now with my son. Will you in 15 years time?
