Who on earth said karting or any motor sport was meant to be *affordable*? Anything that involves buying equipment - be it horse/kart/car/bike will involve expense. Even football involves expense - if you're out practicing your craft you can't be earning a living so you can't support your family.
All you can do is your best. Good preparation costs nothing, time spent on the kart costs nothing. Time spent with your son enjoying yourselves is priceless.
At 7 you don't worry about whether Fred is better because he's got better equipment, we're only talking about the blink of an eye per lap and if it's more than that it's unlikely to be due to the equipment. If he genuinely gets good, you can work and work and work to climb the greasy pole and have so much more satisfaction because you started with nothing.
But affordable? Nah, motor racing was developed for rich people to show how good they are.
