What seems to be coming out of here is to get the set up somewhere right and to get the lad to relax and enjoy himself. It does work...

...my lad started inJTKM at Clay a couple of years ago on an old Venom Sidewinder. After his novice races, he was getting a few reasonable lap times but not that good. We had been listening to all sorts of conflicting advice on setup and during that winter I managed to find the factory setup info on Paul Carr's web site. at the first test of the next season he'd found a second and we had a baseline to work from.

Halfway through last year we bought an Alonso because he was wringing just as much from the Venom as it was about to give. What with GCSEs, my work, budget restraints etc he didn't get much practice and times were still in the mid-36s and he was falling away from his mates, no matter what I did it made no difference and it was depressing he was no quicker than on the Venom.

Then I got all anal one night and did a spreadsheet based on his Mychron sector times, and proved that if he added his best sector times together he would have had fastest lap so there couldn't be much wrong with the kart. Bang. Last meeting, well into the 35s at last and a trophy in the final. One happy boy.

Keep at it Sam, go back to Zip for baseline set up and get him to trundle around on those settings before getting clever. And don't disparage running with a team for a short bit - you need someone who has experience in depth to give you both sound advice. One of the JTKMers did that last year, he's now back as dad'n'lad and winning and another one says a day with a team taught him and his dad there was so much they didn't know they didn't know!

Hope it works out. If the rest of the world genuinely reckons the later chassis is better, you need to stick with it.
