a solution is 'NICE'... (non invasive checks engineered).

I produced kit for the Honda Gx160. You remove the clutch, remove the spark plug, fit a transducer to the pto end of the crank and a vernier is attached to measure piston position, in line with the cyl bore.
I could quickly check valve timing, lift/stroke/ignition timing/casing anomalies plus other basic checks, quickly and at no rebuild cost.The future is NICE!

This was developed years ago...
