Generally old tyres tend to harden and dry out - at varying rates according to storage conditions - and as a rule of thumb anything over a few years old will not be any good. You will indeed mask the performance of the kart when your slicks have you sliding all over the place...

There are plenty of used tyres for sale on the marketplace on this site for not a lot of money. If not go to a local track, and front running drivers will discard rubber with some life left in it when the laptimes come down by a tenth or so. They will be pleased to give them to you FOC by way of easy disposal!
