If you are going to race in Honda Cadets then I would suggest that you buy the best you can afford. A new Project One (complete with engine) probably depreciates by a £1000 pounds in its first full year of racing but after year one that depreciation slows to about £400 in year 2.
If you aim to buy a good late 2010 or early 2011 with an engine (and now is a good time to be looking as cadet drivers look to move up a class for next year)you should be able to get a complete outfit for about £1500 including some spares, is this within your budget? Remember that even at the end of your first year this age of equipment will have a good resale value. If you choose or only have the budget to buy an older kart, either buy from a known and reputable supplier who may have taken one in part exchange or get someone from your local circuit to maybe give you a second opinion. Unfortunately I have seen some horrendous "great buys" appear at my local track that in my opinion were downright dangerous. You may save a few hundred pounds on your initial purchase but by the time you get the Kart safe and ready to scrutineer that saving has gone and you have had a lot of hassle.
