Newbie question - why not buy an older chassis ?

After a few years driving as a cadet at an 'arrive and drive' place my son is about to move into Honda Cadets. Now seems a good time to buy a Kart but I'm confused about buying a chassis and in particular, why not to buy an older one.
Some people are suggesting to stay clear of anything more than a few years old whilst others are saying, if it's his first Kart and the chassis is straight, age isn't so important. Certainly you can get a lot more for your money if you go for an older chassis.

I'd welcome your experience and wisdom on the topic pls (plus any other pointers for a first time buyer).
