All great advice, just be really careful on buying from ebay as karts can only be raced in MSA rounds for up to 9yrs (i think). A lot of stuff on there has open ended square side pods which are no longer legal to race.
Its fine if you want a cheap kart to start with an try out, not so great if you try to race it and have to spend out on new kit.

I'd pretty much rule out WTP as there are so few around. Go to Rye and see what people are using. I personally found it easier to have the same chassis manufacturer as the majority when we first started as its easier to get advice and get an idea of where you really are against the competition.

Despite what you may read, most cadet dads are a friendly bunch and will help out where they can.

Now is a good time to buy as its coming to the end of the season, just be wary of paying a premium for a "top end" engine if you are just starting out, you won't get the value of a front running engine without the seat time.

Most importantly, enjoy it and your son will enjoy it too.
