“Why does my engine read one figure on the Dyno by one engine builder and a different figure by another?” Having been asked this question so many times on a regular basis, I decided to share this with you all.

Well, it’s all related to something called: ‘corrected horsepower’.

We have all seen and made claims of an engine's horsepower, however, this stated horsepower is almost never what the engine actually puts out. Why? Most stated horsepower figures are "corrected" values. The correction standards were developed to discount the observed horsepower readings taken at different locations and weather conditions. In short, an engine builder at Glan-y-Gors or Shenington could never produce as much horsepower as an engine builder at sea level because there is much less oxygen for the engine to burn at a higher altitude. Not to mention other less obvious weather conditions that affects the engine.

Most people are aware of the atmospheric correction factors that are used to compare an engine's power output from one day or location to another. These factors, however, can be confusing and even deceptive. Many engine builders will declare that their engines’ horsepower is a figure that is “set in stone". This is not the case, as we now know that engines will give a different dyno reading from one day to the next.

This may all sound very confusing and you may start to question your dyno figures. One thing to remember is: Make sure your engine builder alters the atmospherics correctly within their software program each time they run the engine. If not your dyno readings will be meaningless.

Hope this helps.
