I think rotax will push a direct injection 2 stroke into the market. There is some rumour that they are getting closer to the FIA which makes me think direct injection will be the replacement for KF. Rotax have probably spent a significant amount of money developing their direct injection (E-Tec) technology for snowmobiles and marine applications. I would imagine they will want to maximise their profit and introduce it to karting. Possibly as a unit that can run with rotax initially.
I'm sure the karting world will get ripped off but in the real world a direct injection injector is about 15USD and a pump about 30USD. I've used spark plugs more expensive then that. However it remains to be seen what the cost of the electronics that go with it are.
Anyway to answer the question, karting will never go 4 stroke unless a legislation is put in place by the EU or 2 strokes become more expensive. Karting isn't really about reliability and length between service, its about initial outlay, and maybe passion, and 4 stroke has a long way to get the same bang per buck initial outlay or passionate response from those who use it.
