On the same day the Dunkeswell meeting was abandoned at the end of the heats.
Various people suggested that it was safe to continue, that they had raced in worse weather.
The reason was simple, away from the track water was closing off all the roads and the police were concerned that they would have a lot of people effectively trapped 'on the island'...and someone in the emergency services had thought far enough ahead to realise that they had this meeting with a lot of visitors on the top of the hill.
I'm told that some of the last escapees were travelling through water two foot deep on the last route out.
As you say, the reason for action is not always obvious to everyone.
