Right, this is fairly long but bare with it, I've been thinking about it for a while.
I think we can all agree that something needs to be done to improve Karting numbers nationally. We currently have the 'Go Motorsport' campaign which does a good job but obviously is hindered by their budget as to how far they can go. So I was thinking how could the karting community come together, do something incredible, have fun doing it, but ultimately promote karting everywhere?
--The plan
1000 Karts, at one time, on one track (huge airfield). We make one incredible video, and then spread it everywhere.
--So how do we get numbers?
1.Super one has about 300 entrants overall (i think?). They are all pretty keen karters prepared to travel so we expect around 80% turnout from them. So that's 240 karts.
2.Clubs around the country also have a lot more karters, however dependant on location they may not want to travel. So if we assume an additional 240 karts from Clubs in the local (ish) area. People also have spare karts that they dust down and put any old driver in, I personally have a very knackered 1999 Gillard.
3. Corporate Karting stands to make an absolute Łkilling if this scales, so if they bring their fleets of karts we could be laughing. There are 130 tracks listed on this site, most of which have around 10 karts each.
So I think, (with a LOT of work), we can achieve 1000 karts.
---Scaling up, going viral
This video needs to scale, it needs to be good, funny, and needs to go viral somehow. (Imagine a FENTON...FENTON....type video with 1000 karts running away in it instead of deer). It also needs a base of people relentlessly sharing it to start it off...we’d have the core base of the 1000 drivers, plus the 1000 mechanics + families. If we make something worth sharing that part should be easy
---Celebrities
This is a good cause, we’re fighting for the survival of our sport, and if we're talking this scale then we can probably get Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton involved...and maybe even an F1 car making an appearance?...could be incredible!
---Costs
Everyone arrives by themselves and pays for themselves like any other karting event. There shouldn't be any damage and it'll just use a bit of fuel. Assuming the landowner of the airfield was keen and we had permission then costs should be pretty minimal. Video editing would cost a bomb, so basically we would need to find someone who cares enough about karting to give a bit of their time. (Also, if the video is successful, they'd have a fantastic showreel).
Ultimately this is the kind of thing that big companies (like Vodafone) might support, transport costs for long distance karters might be covered by them, who knows?
