Interesting responses.

I agree that T&G or Clutched units can stall, and I agree that karting is inherently dangerous.

I guess the point i was trying to make is that DD is old technology and brings with it inherent dangers that are exclusive to it.

I've followed TKM this year and have seen with my own eyes injuries sustained and near misses occuring that are purely down to the DD design. Yes other factors are in play, such as drivers not slowing, but the fact remains, marshalls/drivers etc are more exposed to risk with a DD Kart than a clutched or TaG unit.

People stopped using Penny Farthings because they were superceeded by newer, better, safer technology.

As for the cost arguement, that is a complete red herring. Karting is inherently expensive. You only have to walk round the paddock at Whilton Mill, PFI or any of the others to realise that everybody is spending serious money, Yes some have more to spend but if anybody at MSA level says they're spending less than a few thousand a year I'd be more than suprised.

Finally lets not forget that Dale Earnhardt died because he was too macho to wear a head/neck restraint. Something every serious racing driver now does.
