Ian - the holes are elongated as a result of the wheel coming loose. Before this problem occurred the holes were perfect.
The wheels are Douglas low volume mag alloys, bought new, and only done one endurance race (2 hrs) prior to this problem. The wheels have been off and on a few times - kart won't fit in the van with the rear wheels in place.
As alanrr said in the previous post, normal nylocs won't fit - there's not enough clearance around the stud holes. The K type nuts are M8 and require a 10 mm socket, as opposed to 12mm socket for normal locknuts.
So - I'll buy a new wheel AND a supply of new nuts. Now I know what to watch for, we shouldn't have the same problem again.
Experience is a wonderful thing :)
