most helmets are made up of polyester gel coat with a combination fibreglass/woven material all bonded with polyester resin both are impervious to basic paint systems, our cars are made completely of carbon fibre ,not using any vinyl ester gel and they paint straight on to them using a ready available paint system with no probs at all. but make sure when flatting back you do not use any thing to abrasive hope this answers any questions
