I think the problem is that in some circumstances the automatic points is overly harsh. My son fell foul of this when he overtook under a yellow flag that, in my opinion, was not properly displayed and arguably in the wrong place. The driver in front did not slow down and the overtake was a clean move, there was no contact and nobody was fired off etc etc. He genuinely did not see the flag and was astonished when he was told about it when he came in. Result, a reversal of positions - correct. Three points on licence - by the letter of the law correct but in my opinion, in these circumstances, overly harsh. The CoC agreed with me but had no option. This ruling in my opinion does not remove the power from the CoC to apply points if he deems appropriate but removes the compulsion to do so.
