2 points there.....

Firstly, 10 years ago grids were not as big as they are now....less karts racing = less chance of an incident....

Secondly...and I don't mean to highlite this but as we were sat on the grid waiting to go out (Senior Rotax), we chuckled at the amount of parents at the ready with trolleys just about to go collect their driver off track....at one point we counted 8 karts from just 20 sat on trackside...it was JTKM !!!!!!
