Hi Andy - As many have said there won't be 1.5sec difference in engines, unless there is something seriously wrong with your carb or engine. 5 months as a cadet is no time, and it sounds like you lads progression is good for his experience. My lad started at 8 and didn't win anything for two years, but once he had the experience, the flood doors opened and he was a top national driver. The best advice is to get him out as often as possible at as many different tracks you can.

Again from personal experience if you want to check your engine out I would recommend talking to Steve McMahon at Shart Motorsport. He will dyno your engine and compare it with his top engines on the day and trust me will tell you exactly how it performs. His charges are a fraction of some of the major tuners. Trust me you don't have to throw large money at engines to get to the front, work with your tuner, and if you hit on a really good engine, save it for the important races. When we got to national races we had one engine that we only put on for the finals, but the difference over the others was marginal, a few tenths if that.

So in summary, the best answer is bum in seat time.
