Where's the double standards, cheats are cheats. Whether it's clutches, tyres, engines or fuel.
I'm often asked about engines 'What difference does X or Y illegal mod make?'. People seem surprised that I genuinely don't know, what is the point in testing anything that isn't race legal? You're only going to fool yourself and potentially present yourself with temptation to cheat.
As for the make it all legal argument, as pointed out, their are surely non-toxic tyre treatments, but I bet the toxic ones are better. And then what about the exotic compounds that people will then have developed at huge cost. Where do you draw the line? You have to draw a line somewhere, otherwise you end up with an arms race for the best treatments be it fuel, tyres or clutches.
