From a different angle, I don't believe the too many classes argument makes sense. In fact, I think it's the opposite, I would say that the reason karting is so big (relatively speaking) in the UK is because there is so much choice.
In France the karting classes are as you would apparently wish it to be, effectively one for each age group/weight and a little overlap. The federation will often make a change without consulation and a whole class will be disbanded to make way for a new chassis/engine. Which is exactly why karting is fast dissappearing up it's own backside here.
Each class has become a Monopoly for the big boys, no choice of budget or entry level and until you spend mega bucks in a team, you'll never get a sniff of a podium even at club level. All the while 2 or 3 importers/ manufacturers are laughing all the way too the bank.
Take it from me, the grass is always greener, but if I could teleport my life back to the UK, I would in a heartbeat, just to go karting, because you have it so good.
Actually, I'd pick the best of both worlds.
From France I'd bring, mains power in every paddock, common sense approach to helmets and an annual unlimited practice pass for £130. but that's another story.
