Mike,
for the last three years I have been driving a 1999 VW transporter. I use it daily to get to work (30 miles each way) and the only two times I checked mpg it was doing 37 and 38 mpg. I use it for karting which we always drag our caravan to the meeting too. It is decked out for two karts and takes all our gear including the shopping, bedding, food, spares, genny and everything one might need for a family of four's racing weekend (including the obligatory XBox and tele).
I can draw comparisons between a Fiat Ducato and a Tranny as I have used them and the Transporter is sli9ghtly better than a Tranny and miles better than a Ducato (in my humble opinion). I can't comment for other vans but I will say this one is damn quick, damn reliable and damn economical. It uses no water and a minute amount of oil (1/2 litre every three months or so) and the only other van I would consider swapping it for is either another Transporter! Having said that, and again, in my humble opinion, the Tranny is a good van too.
Please remember one thing, some vans are cheap for a reason...
