Hi cadet dad66,
The exhaust system on a 2-stroke is particularly critical. Manufacturers design the system to give best performance over a certain rpm range depending on the intended use.
As richydehav said, carbon build-up will affect the gas-flow through the exhaust. This will also alter the purging and charging of the cylinder, having a very marked influence on performance.
We have used Caustic Soda to clean our WTP exhausts in the past. Some recommend heating the entire system on a hot barbeque and burning out the carbon, others go for the cola option. If you have a large budget, replace at regular intervals!
A good way to check for carbon build-up is to weigh the exhaust when new and again after use.
Whatever method you choose, keep it clean inside: yes, it makes a big difference.
Hope this helps.
Dave.
