If it makes you feel any better I used to put my 250 gearbox on the roof of my car, but I did have roof rails with two bits of 3x3 (with notches cut out to stop lateral movement) and 4 ratchet straps to keep it down tight with no problems. If you have roof rails I would say go for it, if you dont I would be very careful
