I'm trying to make sense of the logic (and safety / engieering) principles behind (say) the 2010 helmet regulations.
Besides better design & materials usage (strength) etc, one aspect is to reduce the mass of the helmet; to 1300g or with some of the permitted types. A lighter helmet, especially on smaller children introduces less shock loads into the neck in an impact.
This poses an interesting issue, as why on earth does the MSA permit camera to be attached to helmets ?. A camera will not just increase the mass of the helmet, but the lever arm effect of the mass of the camera (raises helmet centre of gravity) and thus will be potentially more injurous to the driver in an impact.
Other than banning them, perhaps scrutineering should weigh helmets which carry cameras ?>
A secondary effect is similar to the chassis protector argument, what happens if a camera comes off on-track ?.
