I started my first season this year at 53 in SubaruKarts (basically twin engine prokart with Subaru instead of Honda engines). As near as maintenance free as you can get, cheap to buy, sealed boxstock motors-so pretty well even performance for everyone. It's non MSA, isn't particularly fast, but does mean you really can race on a very small budget. Have a good hard look at how much you are prepared to spend - there's a lot more to it than just buying a kart.
So, you are not too old, but see what classes are being run near to you, and see some racing. You might decide that racing isn't for you, and be happy just to get a kart to play with at weekends...lots of people do this too. Mind you, racing is fun, even trailing round at the back of the field like I do.
