David is right in what he says, in a fixed gear kart, maximum acceleration occurs at the point of max torque, think about it, when you drive say a tkm, max torque is around 10500rpm, the kart pulls really well upto there then the acceleration dies off as it pulls to max power 15700rpm ish and beyond.

The same is true for each gear in a geared kart, maximum accelation is achieved at the point of maximum torque, obviously you will accelerate quickest in first gear, as this applies the most torque to the rear wheels.
