I can't see how the retailer are charging vat...

..on these helmets if they have a safety cetificate on them.

We used to use the BS standard but we now have the Snell standard as well and that is still a safety standard.

If the helmet is specifically designed with safety in mind, it is vat exempt, HMRC says so.

However, HMRC could also argue that because the helmet is used for recreation and leisure and is not a legal requirement, then it should attract vat at the relevant rate.

I would require a clarification from HMRC themselves.
