The other day I was very frustrated because I just couldn't catch that 'other driver'. I was clearly much faster than him in many parts of the track, I would drop back after an overtaking attempt and then work my way back up to his bumper, but never seemed to be able to complete a safe manoeuvre on him.
Pulling out of corners the kart seemed to hesitate, even when I had a run on the kart in front, he was able to accelerate away.
But, a lap from the end, there was a substantial grinding noise from the engine, followed by a tinkling sound. Something had broken. I slowed up but the kart kept going and I thought I knew what had happened.
So I put my foot back down and that sensation of bogging down had disappeared. I made up all the ground that I had lost but couldn't quite take him on the last bend.
When I got into parc ferme, my diagnosis was confirmed, the bendix had disintegrated.
And, I have to say, this had been going on this engine for several meetings and we had never quite found the cause. Indeed since the club champion had tried the kart and put in a time a second a lap quicker than I, it was put down to my style. But that lap was also over 0.5 second slower than his time on his kart.
So, if one has a starter type kart and one has mystery bogging down out of the corners, it might be worth investigating the bendix.
