A fracture is a lot better than tendon and ligament damage. My wrist took 6 months to get back up to speed. My physio recommended swimming. Its good all round exercise plus the water gives your wrist movement gentle resistance without too much strain. While in the water just do simple movements, rotating the wrist and flicking underwater with the fingers.
I wouldn't recommend any weights as this could slow the healing process. Don't do too much too soon. Total rest for a few weeks, before starting any rebuilding work.
Kids are active enough to keep fit, so i'd say it'll be a harder struggle keeping him resting.
