Theres no need to change to a rod, all the older chassis used to have just one cable untill the msa brought in a rule to have a back up cable. Just make sure there set up so the primary cable pulls the brake and the second cable is slightly slack then if the primary cable snaps the second one will still pull the brake on. You should also ensure you use bowden type cable.
