Chris,
I am sure that the barrels that are on issue at the moment will be about equal to each other compared to those we have seen previously, the problem will come when everybody has been sold on the idea of these 'equal' barrels, and then they dig out the ones from the 'Quarantine Area'of the Rotax Quality Control Department, and shove them into the loop.
Nobody can afford to produce a cast, then machined, then polished etc etc etc item, which then turns out to be 'on the edge of useful tollerances, and bin it. and that includes Rotax. If the item is there or there-abouts, it will go into the loop at some stage. The real problem is 'who' is setting the tollerances in the first place, the manufacturer. They will sell anything to anybody, but not straight away, as they first, as mentioned above, have to 'prove' that their modification/improved manufacture method is as successful as they claimed it would be, and the only way to do that is to release the known good stuff first.
Rotax will not be the first or only people to do this, but it is in my opinion another apalling situation for the 'ordinary' karter, and will not relieve the situation of silly money for 'known good' engines which has been at least part of the claims made about the introduction of the new barrels, just like the new cadet carbs again.
