To be fair I haven't used the Pi at all (mainly because its too expensive) but I've worked with some drivers who have and claim it is more useful. However I believe that they are just not used to the Mychron software yet. You can get the Mychron 4 plus gps and datakey for about £750. As far as I know the system works out Lat Acc and Long Acc from the gps signal (acceleration = velocity^2/radius etc) and the GPS speed is always going to be better then a speed sensor on the wheel. I find it very useful for driver training and to diagnose kart handling and driver errors.
Personally I doubt it does any better of a job then the Pi System but its almost half the price for the same job. For clarity the full blown mychron system with pedal and steering sensors, plug temp, EGT, LCU is about £2000.
