Standing starts are far more dangerous than rolling starts... its why they're not used in NASCAR/IRL. The consequences of somebody at the back of the grid rear-ending a staller near the front don't bear thinking about.
I agree that there is a problem with first lap incidents and the root causes are :
o Disregard for the consequences of bumping/boring brought about by the advent of bodywork.
o Karts bunched too close together on the grid - need to separate the rows by several kart lengths and stagger the grid, like you'd have in a car race.
o Too many karts on the track - maybe there should be a limit of 16 karts per race ?
o Disregard for wet conditions - maybe races should be started on a single file basis.
To be honest I actually advocate a faster rolling lap. I think the pace of the rolling laps at many circuits is too slow and it results in a mexican wave delay when people brake and/or accelerate before the lights change. I'll probably get the head taken off me now for saying that but on the occasions I've raced with a faster rolling lap, there have been fewer incidents.
Food for thought.
