Do Anyone Tow With a VW Passat?

I have a VW passat 2003 tdi sport 130bhp diesel which i tow my trailer with but i seem to be getting very low mpg...
I normally get between 40-50mpg with no trailer but as soon as i tow a trailer weighing about 1tonne i only get 20mpg max. I assumed it was the weight of the trailer, why i was getting so little mpg so i bought a new trailer weighing just 400kg but i still only get 30mpg on a motorway run. Can anyone shed a bit of light on this matter? Or someone who have a passat could advice what they get while towing
