Hi Jay
Hope this answers your questions
Q1. Why are you guys running the class at Over 40's.
The rest of the country seems to be over 35's for the Masters Class.
ANSWER Clay committee decided that the age would be over 40. The original idea was over 35, but the committee decided that 40 was more appropriate.
Q2. Do you still have a min Drivers Weight in 177 Masters?
I think the Min Driver weight should be scrapped in 177 Masters if a club runs to that rule.
Some clubs do, some clubs don't. I think we need some uniformity on Age and class regs for Masters 177
ANSWER The criteria for Masters at clay is 40 or over, minimum weight of driver and kart is 177 kgs, max lead allowed on the kart is 25 kgs.
Jay, when the idea was proposed it was 177 Masters. When the club spoke with the MSA they got permission to run Senior Rotax Masters, with the 177/40 criteria and a max 25 kgs of extra ballast to meet the 177 weight. I dont know the full legalities etc, we ran with the 177 class but with blue and white numbers to distinguish the masters from 177. It made it easy for the scrutineers to see who was who.
As to what the age limit should be, I dont know. Some people feel that 177 is seen as a class to go to if you cant be competitive in senior max and are near the 85 kilos weight limit. Where as 177 was aimed at the older driver who was well over the senior max limit of 162 kgs.
I personally saw the masters as a way to give people stuck in the seniors who were below the 85 kilos a chance to race competitively at 177. If it helps to keep people in the sport then its got to be a good thing.
Clay have put the Masters at the back of the grid, but I have to say it was pretty close racing in the one heat I managed to finish, in fact too close for me ( Must remember to look for last lap board and flag in future, sorry Trevor)) I think the masters all came away happy, enjoyed the racing and are looking forward to the next race.
As to the MSA, well there is obviously a opening here for a Masters class. How it would affect senior/177 grids I dont know, those grids may get smaller as there becomes enough Masters to form a seperate grid. Clubs might be concerned that they have to run another 4 races in a day (Extra hour racing in Nov - Mar).
Hope to see you back at Clay soon in the Masters, cant wait to see Pratty's face as a master beats him LoL.
