Bayford Meadows K C has been running standing starts I think from 2007. The upshot has been to see a vast reduction in first corner incidents (carnage). However, as experienced by ourselves, having worked hard during the heats to get to the front of the grid, for various reasons, the result of the final has been down to whether your kart has been able to pull away from the start adequately at the same time/rate as the rest of the grid (oiled up plugs comes to mind).

Two points come to mind.

Firstly, and I stand to be corrected, Rotax engines are not designed for standing starts, which could have implications warranty wise.

Secondly, and I think this may be more to the point in light of this and other recent threads, the question of speed over the start line. Reducing the speed of the grid into the first corner could be reduced by proper control of the grid's speed approaching the start line. You only have to listen to engine tones to know that most drivers have the foot flat down well before the start line. Should this be the case?

Rolling starts need to continue but a very critical eye kept on the starts (pushing/excessive speed etc), with appropriate warnings at drivers briefing with immediate and severe action being taken against offenders. No more warnings, if they are racing the drivers should know what is expected of them, deviate from that and they are penalised.

Whilst these are my thoughts I know that there is much said in the paddock about what happens on the track and the lack of applying appropriate penalties to offenders. We have a rule book, apply the rules, it would be great see whole grids starting and finishing without first lap incidents.

I'm interested to see what the rsponses are.
