Hello Steve
I'm still a relative newbie myself, but can give you some pointers.
http://www.letsgokarting.net/ does take place at Buckmore, but its VERY popular.
The most important thing is to take your time and visit some tracks (there are several in the SE), certainly don't rush to spend money!
My son is now 9 we stared when he was 8 taking part in 2 hire kart championships InKart @ Daytona, Sandown park and Junior Club @ Buckmore Park - he loved the track at Buckmore and the format at Daytona.
Last easter we bought a 2nd hand kart from someone who races at Rye House (Hertfordshire) - it took us a long time to get going, gradually reducing the Hire Kart racing while getting track time in the kart. Hes got his ARKS test in 10 days so fingers crossed we will be in some real racing soon!!
My tip would be to go to a monthly club meeting at your nearest track, where are you?
Everyone is very helpful and friendly if you post a message like "newbie needs accompanying near xxxx" someone is sure to reply.
If you are in the Herfordshire area, we plan to be at Rye House on Sunday - feel free to come and say hi!
