I have to agree with Itpro's sentiments here .... before even considering which class to go for, get yourself down to 2 or 3 race meetings and see what it's all about! As a noob karting is a minefield of diffent classes, chassis etc - it's easy to buy something that won't suit your needs, wallet or location!
It's not really the case that a class like Rotax is a step up from TKM (125cc vs 115cc), they just have different advantages. I won't go into the pros and cons of each because it is so much easier to explain at a race meeting with the karts in front of you.
There is also another class that gets overlooked on this forum (mainly because it has its own forum so few of the drivers post here) which is Easykart. It's worth considering too - take a look at their website. It's a national series, so means a more circuit variation but also more travelling, but being based in Derby you are nicely central for the circuit they visit. There is a winter round at Whilton Mill (near Northampton) on Sun 8th Feb is well worth a visit.
Head along to an MSA meeting (TKM Rotax F.Blue) too and make a fully informed decision before parting with your cash!
Welcome to karting
