You can get the shell chromed properly but to do it they have to grow a very thin layer of copper onto the shell but this is no good as it changes the shells rigidity.the next process is to apply silver nitrate to a prepared surface and that looks exactly like chrome but the process has many problems if you look back at the maclaren pit crew helmets at spa this year they had a gold tint to them that was one of the problems they are affected by sun also problems with adhesion.Maclaren now use the next process which is vacuum metalising a much better system the helmet is prepared and put in a vacuum vesel and aluminium is exploded into the chamber and it deposits on the surface of your helmet and again it looks exactly like chrome it is a very thin layer and needs laquer over it.The best chrome you can get from a paint gun is what is on the maclaren cars looks more like a polished stainless steel.The only problem with any of the above methods is they are prone to small surface imperfections a small dust particle stands out but on a normal painted surface they don't.If you are after a chrome helmet most helmet painters can supply that finish but be aware of the imperfections. :-)
