Both have their plus and minus points. A main niggle with S1 for cadets is that you have to buy a new set of slicks for every round. Last weekend this meant using a new set for one practice session on Saturday and then the final on Sunday as all the heats were in the wet. At the previous meeting it was wet for all our heats and the final so we only used the new slicks for one practice session.
For next year we had already decided to do only one series and the choice was made easy when the dates/venues were published. With S1 six of the rounds fall in term time and although the Friday practice is `optional' in reality this means at least having the Friday off - especially as next year the official practice will only be on Saturday morning with time qualifying in the afternoon. With Stars there are six meetings with three falling in term time and three in the holidays so only need three Fridays off which allows for a couple of Thursday afternoons as well for the more distant tracks.
Both series will have ferry journeys and we know from experience that the stars one will be a special rates (about Ł70 for a motorhome and up to five passengers)- hopefully S1 will negotiate a good deal on the Irish trip.
Plus point for S1 next year will be time qualifying but Stars are having qualifying rounds. The pits at Stars tend to be more crowded than S1 as S1 has three groups which keeps overall numbers lower in each one - with perhaps more practice time.
