The ABKC primarily represents the clubs and relies on them to disseminate information to drivers, nevertheless doing everything we can to publicise our newsletter, website, Karting Magazine, club noticeboards etc.
When the ABkC took over the organisation of the National Championships in the early 90’s because the RAC (now MSA) wished to discontinue most of the British Championship classes the class engine and tyre suppliers were willing to provide a prize fund. This continued to be the case when new classes were in a position to have National Championships e.g. Rotax. Dunlop supported the Cadet and some other classes, the MSA has ownership of the British Championship class, firstly Comer and now IAME and the ABkC took over the ‘ownership’ of the Honda classes from RATPRO and Andersons with the Dunlop sponsorship continuing because of the tyre choice after tendering. Tal-Ko have always paid the drivers directly, for the other classes a single invoice was preferred and the ABkC used the funds in their entirety for driver prize money. From 2012 the ABkC affiliated class owners and other tyre suppliers like Dunlop agreed that 15% of their sponsorship to drivers should be put into a Club Development fund. Many thousands of pounds have been granted to clubs for various projects and initiatives. The ABkC has also subsidised to clubs the cost of Honda scrutineering tools and supported Kartmania and many other projects as well as producing promotional material, exhibiting at shows etc. The elected representatives of the kart clubs to the steering group have voted their approval of all financial arrangements and the accounts are audited and approved by the AGM. These steering group representatives give their time voluntarily in the interests of the sport. They give their time because they want to help the sport, not because of any commercial interests.

It is true that the ABkC has joint ownership of the TKM and Rotax classes but it has no financial input or output, albeit the arrangement does provide some measure of influence on changes being in the best interests of competitors. Whether the support for these classes comes from tyres, engines or just the general profit of the companies involved is not known and probably has little bearing on the price of tyres. What is known is that JAG and Tal-Ko do not limit their support of their classes to the Super One but spend many thousands helping clubs and other championships. In the case of Dunlop the importer once told me the support perhaps amounted to 50p per set of tyres. Once again the importer has supported clubs with prizes and this is not limited to the Super One or Super Four.

The ABkC is the owner of Honda Cadet and jointly some other classes including gearbox and will endeavour to help with finding where possible prizes in these classes but not to the extent of using its own funds. The MSA took over the tyre contracts in Cadet in 2015 as it is responsible for the chassis side (and engines for the IAME), the ABkC is responsible only for the Honda engine side of the class. Therefore any promotional funds linked to the new contracts will go to the MSA for presumably general support for the classes as does promotional support from the IAME contract. Due to the perception raised by clubs (and this was prior to the 2015 AGM) the Steering Group agreed to discontinue the class support arrangements for Super One prizes coming via the ABkC invoicing from the end of 2016. However the class owners have agreed to continue to support the ABkC Club Development Fund and this will continue to be used to support clubs (primarily smaller clubs) with funds to help their projects. It does however leave the Cadet classes without that prize fund.

Prior to the ABKC being formed in 1990 and establishing a common tyre for each class and enlisting club membership and adherence to that class tyre and structure the clubs used to vote each year on which tyre they might use from an RAC approved list. The RAC also ceased to publish detailed class regulations. The ABkC filled that void with class regulations in their Green Book (which latterly became the MSA Gold Book) and appointed promoters for the main class national championships. From 2017 tyre tenders are no longer required in the junior and senior direct drive classes because they are chosen by the class owner and homologated along with the rest of the class (with MSA tyre testing if necessary). That leaves Cadet and gearbox primarily to be tendered periodically. The ABkC priorities are now to work with the MSA to simplify club level racing, to introduce a single rule book for karting and to improve training for officials.
