The only path is through the seal on the water pump.

The crankshaft or balance shaft seals couln't cause it.

Is the gear oil level dropping dramaically or is it just a film on the water?

Oil floats on water so what you see in the radiator will be the sum total of the loss.

Unfortunately you have to split the crankcase because the seal is behind the bearing.

Is there water in the gear oil? I would expect to have a weep of water out of the hole in the rear of the crankcase if the seals were faulty.

The water pressure should push water into the gearcase so wh not drain and flush the cooling system and retry it before you pull to bits what may be a good motor.

A check of the water cap and cylinder head seals is an easier path as a small leak on the cylinder head seal could allow fuel into the water and leave a tiny amount of oil when the fuel evaporates.

Explore the easy bits first.
