Like you my kart sits on top of the trailer. I was having problems with salt damage in the winter. The other problem was damage to decals with the sheet I was using rubbing on them.
I made a frame that went over the kart then got a local HGV sheet makers & repairs to make a custom cover to go over the frame & down the side of the trailer. The sheet maker put eyes around the bottom of the sheet & gave me heavy shot cord (elastic rope) to tension the sheet, works great, kart always clean & no salt damage this winter.
The cost was my time & Ł120 for the custom made cover, my trailer top is 4' x 8' & the cover covers all of it.
