Thanks for all the insight so far. Alex (48) doesn't remember much and I think he likely blacked out just for a second as he certainly doesn't remember hanging out of the kart....which he most certainly was. I saw the beginning of the incident which looked like 48 was overtaking a novice who was on the outside through turn 1. Novice's front right wheel got caught in front of 48s back left, throwing his kart into the air and side on to the oncoming traffic. After that I know there was some further impact which threw him across on to the grass. What I don't recall seeing is anyone going over his kart which means the only thing that could have marked his helmet with tyre rubber is him hanging over the side of the kart with his head either on his own tyres or someone else's. As for the bent steering wheel, column and broken Mychron. this can only have been caused by either his head or chest. There is no cracking in the helmet so....still confused as to what caused that level of impact. Sorry to Abbi for getting caught up in our mess and glad to hear she is ok.
