Is it a case that he wasn't getting the 'point and it will go' sensation (More Stable) that he was getting with the inters?

We had similar issues when my boy had spent so much time on inters that he didn't like slicks.

Unfortunately that's the time you need to be doing a bit of pushing. each time he comes in and says he can turn in, you need to make out you have done something and send him back out to do at least 10 laps.... once he is used to it he will be fine.
