Thanks for the reply, a really bad experience for you and your lad, and I will get the carb checked.
Fortunately, this particular carb is untouched in that respect, grubby on the outside but very clean inside: no scouring of the throttle body as was found on yours.
However, that unfortunate incident aside, it would seem your carb did perform well enough to be used at Super One level.
Incidentally, I didn't buy the carb intentionally, it just happened to be attached to a junior cylinder along with exhaust bend I paid Ł20 for.
