tar and glue remover - available from DIY shops etc. is actually tolulene, a petroleum based solvent. You can get 5 litre tins from industrial paints suppliers - much cheaper and a tin lasts for ages. Fetches old glue off fast, but you mustn't leave it on too long as it can soften plastic and / or affect paint finishes. Test a small area first. Petrol can work well with glue removal, but with both you need to be careful with your own H&S.
Brake cleaner can work well too. especially as a prep before you put more sticker back on.
as other comments - heat helps too.
