You can leave silicon (Dot 5) fluid in for longer periods, it was developed for vehicles that were mothballed for long periods like military kit.

So long as you flush out the old fluid, I've found you can use Dot 3, 4 or 5.1 in place of silicon fluid.

The difference between 3, 4 and 5.1 is their boiling points, although you must be aware that the boiling point alters with the amount of water that is absorbed, that's why some people have problems with their brakes. 3,4 and 5.1 can be mixed, it will just alter the boiling point.

Both silicon and glycol based fluid absorb water, just don't mix them.

The seal business relates to the natural rubber seals that were used in cars in the UK, rather than the 'man made' rubbers like neoprene.

All seals should now be synthetic.
