Speak to Will Tew at Alpha Timing as their system works it out for the clubs that run Alpha. They're generally really good at getting back to you on FB or by email - http://www.alphatiming.co.uk/

From what I understand it is always done by the software that the club has but not sure how clever it is when it comes to working out starting on the left/right. Worth asking Will though.
